A short introduction seems in place: Nirnaeth is a band from Lille, France and 'Thrown Athwart The Darkness' is their first full-length album. The band consists of four members with the following elusive pseudonyms: Yamaël (drums), Zigouille (screams), Malaria (bass), Mutill (guitars). Nirnaeth was founded in 2001 by Malaria and Mutill. About a year and a half later the other two band members joined them. In 2004 they released a limited editions demo of 111 copies called 'Nothing But Ashes'.
'Thrown Athwart The Darkness', their new CD, contains nine true black metal songs, which bask themselves in a decently clear and crisp production. On the whole the music of Nirnaeth does not soar up from the mediocre masses, but there are some particularly interesting moments. Their black metal shows some good ideas and cunning tricks to make it all sound a bit more goading. A whispered intro here, a stunning drum part there, these are but examples of the things that make this CD really stand out.
There are more, but you have to find them for yourselves. I think Nirnaeth can be proud of this debut.
