Nirnaeth, a BRUTAL French Black Metal band are currently bombarding my senses from every conceivable angle.
“Nirnaeth Arnoediad” is everything you’d expect from a gut wrenchingly dark and sinister band of this nature, fast, downright carnage and extremely aggressive. Sporadic drumming throughout and blood curdling riffs combine almost harshly with coarse vocals for a grimy evil effect. Hitting into “War” its obvious that this relentless assault upon my ears is going to be as constant as it is apocalyptic, surely the effect Nirnaeth are going for, and as all good black metal bands should produce, mixed in with the bone crunching riff-age is a decent melody to haul the tracks along. One criticism remains though of Nirnaeth’s work, as I’m partaking on a journey through “Et Nox Facta Est” & “Tenebres” I do start to notice the songs are a little samey but a pleasant surprise comes with “Vampire Hunters” which takes the tone down slightly along with the pace causing an eerie sombre effect. “Black Metal Wrath” & “Pentagram Of Flesh” are truly horrific in terms of brutality and chaos, though the musicianship stays at a very high standard. The apocalyptic feel is summed up brilliantly with “Nothing But Ashes” which has a real end of the world feel to it, and is by far my favourite track. “We’ll be Victorious” however, as the final track proves to be somewhat of an enigma for this band, as heavy as they are can all of a sudden touch upon a more softer, even though still sinister side. A classic ending to a good album.
A must own for all fans of black metal, I myself not heavily into the genre but definitely impressed by this attempt.
